His biggest oddity is that he verbalizes sounds and little else. He hunts down street-level superheroes, putting their masks on a mantle. They are hit or miss reads, but do establish Onomatopoeia as an interesting villain just for how odd a character he is. That said, he’s tangled with Batman on two separate occasions, in Cacophony and Widening Gyre.
He’s far from a long-standing foe for anyone as Onomatopoeia was created by Kevin Smith and tends to only ever appear in his works. Who’s going to mess with a guy who has both shark teeth and a Voldemort nose? He didn’t have enough oomph character-wise though, just being a fence for criminals rather than anything top tier. It’s somewhat a shame since he has the look to be quite the intimidating figure. There was a brief time that it seemed like Great White was being positioned to be a major player in Gotham, but it faded away fast, just as it does with many new characters. It isn’t the worst thing seeing how many other characters are far more compelling. He’s made a few appearances here and there in cartoons, but for the most part, he’s now nonplayer.
If writers want to use one, it’s always Sal Maroni or Falcone, always skipping right over Thorne. Now he’s just an also-ran when it comes to your typical mobster in the Batman universe. There was a time that Rupert Thorne was one of the more well-known gang leaders in Gotham. Instead, he’s introduced and killed in the Batman Eternal series, putting his run as a villain at 15 whole issues. While he may not have been a great fit with Batman, it’s a type of character that could be right at home with the Justice League Dark. That isn’t a horrible decision as he’s taken a little more serious in Arrow and even became William Tockman during the New 52 (discarding the name). He’s been shaped into more of a foe for Green Arrow and even the Teen Titans, rather than a foe of the bat. He has, however, been shifted from being a Batman villain. It isn’t that Clock King has been forgotten, as he still pops up in comics and has made his way to live-action television thanks to Arrow. Jean-Paul Valley only popping up here and there nowadays. Even one of his successors was mostly forgotten about until recently.
Sometimes it’s the sidekicks, of which Batman has a seemingly innumerable amount. Some of these villains were D-list at best, but it isn’t the bad guys. That will surely be the case with many of the baddies made during the new 52. Many of these end up being villains who were created for small arcs, only to never be seen again. When you’re a character that’s both as popular and as long-standing as Batman, you’re bound to have characters that get forgotten in the annals of time.
